This "Pumpkin" Yixing zisha teapot has a 280ml capacity, vividly recreating the natural form of a pumpkin through its lifelike shape. Inspired by field-grown pumpkins, the artist transformed this common vegetable into functional tea ware. The teapot's surface features natural ribbed textures, with undulating lines mimicking the growth patterns on pumpkin skin. Its plump, rounded body captures the fullness of ripened fruit.
Crafted from precious golden duan ni clay, a rare variety in zisha minerals known for its finer texture than regular purple clay, this teapot develops a unique golden hue after high-temperature firing, revealing subtle metallic luster under light. The clay's exceptional breathability maintains tea freshness longer, while prolonged use gradually enhances its warm, translucent appearance.
Designed by Shen Jiankang, a national senior craft artist and Chinese calligraphy/painting/zisha master with three decades of experience (current art director of Kangqian Zisha Art Museum), this piece continues his signature realistic style. The lid knob resembles a curved pumpkin vine with detailed carvings, while the handle mimics a stem with leaves featuring precisely replicated natural curls.
The spout showcases exceptional craftsmanship, shaped like a pumpkin leaf wrapping around the vessel. Vein patterns extend naturally from body to spout, with carefully carved serrated edges balancing aesthetics and functionality. A curled leaf decoration on the side displays realistic insect-bite details, illustrating natural growth processes.
During creation, artisans first hand-sculpt the pumpkin outline before carving 32 precise ribs using specialized tools. The lid-body fit underwent repeated adjustments to ensure leak-proof pouring, while traditional hand-carving techniques created a seven-hole filtration system.
