The clay mixture for this Chinese Zisha teapot proves exceptionally unique. It combines aged laoduan clay matured for decades as the base material, overlaid with green clay slurry following a Republic of China-era formula. This composite material requires at least three filtration processes before becoming workable. Due to differing shrinkage rates between the two clays, firing often results in cracks or deformations. Few artisans today master this traditional slurry coating technique.
The firing process for this handmade Yixing teapot involves significant risks. Kiln temperatures must be precisely maintained between 1180-1200°C, where slightest errors lead to complete failure. Typically, only 1-2 out of 10 such Zisha teapots survive the firing intact. Considering the extreme scarcity of materials, the artisan ultimately decided to create only one definitive piece.
Creator Xu Liuming, recognized as a versatile master in this field, demonstrates equal proficiency in crafting realistic biomimetic shapes like pumpkins and bamboo joints as in executing precise geometric forms. Over thirty years of practice, he has claimed twelve major craft awards including three gold medals in national handmade competitions. His Yixing purple clay teapots grace collections in multiple museums.
The "Pumpkin" Zisha teapot showcases ingenious design elements. Its body replicates the full curves of a mature pumpkin, while the spout mimics naturally twisting vine tendrils.
