2007 Golden Dragon Blood Zisha Teapot: High-Iron Treasure from Huanglong Mountain
$385.71Rare 2007 Golden Dragon Blood Zisha teapot with 2.46% iron content, fired at 1180°C for metallic sheen. Exceptional breathability and fortune symbolism. ¥2700.
Master Yang Peng created a teapot named "Nine Dragon Sons: Qiu Niu 180cc Golden Dragon Blood" using exceptionally rare clay called Golden Dragon Blood Clay. The story begins in 2007 during road construction in Dingshu Town, Jiangsu Province. Workers at Huanglong Mountain's No.3 Slope discovered a miraculous sight - a thin layer of purple clay sandwiched between giant rocks, merely 50 meters from the famous Dashuitan mining pit. This vivid blood-red clay stratum, never exceeding 15cm thickness and weighing about one ton, astonished veteran miners who had never seen such colored soil in their lifetimes. Local legends claimed workers had unearthed a dragon's blood vessel, with crimson symbolizing good fortune in Jiangnan culture.
Scientific analysis revealed this clay contains 2.46% iron oxide, nearly double ordinary zisha clay. This high iron content creates fascinating transformations during firing. At 1180°C, the teapot develops vibrant Chinese red hues, while higher temperatures produce metallic luster. Precise temperature control proves crucial - minor deviations affect results.
Crafting challenges abound with Golden Dragon Blood Clay. Its pronounced granular structure resists shaping - even finely ground powder lacks viscosity. Artisans must pound and knead the clay thousands of times, as improper handling causes cracks. However, successful firing yields exceptional breathability exceeding famous Dicaoqing clay, crucial for tea brewing as it allows optimal leaf expansion and aroma preservation.
Freshly fired teapots appear unremarkable, resembling ordinary pottery without glossy surfaces. Through daily tea maintenance, they undergo magical transformations - tea substances gradually permeate the clay, developing jade-like translucency over time. This "beautification through use" captivates collectors.
In Jiangnan culture, these crimson teapots carry special significance. Elders believe red symbolizes prosperity, attracting wealth through tea preparation. Collectors value them not just as functional items but as spiritual props embodying cultural heritage. Master Yang's creation exemplifies traditional craftsmanship - dragon patterns adorn the body, while precisely calculated spout and handle proportions ensure drip-free pouring.
Extreme material scarcity limits production. The original vein exhausted long ago, current works consume carefully rationed reserves. Collectors treasure each piece as irreplaceable art. For regular users, it transcends tea tool status, becoming a multi-generational heirloom.
Proper maintenance proves essential. Rinse with water after each use, avoiding chemical cleaners. Store in dry, ventilated areas when unused. Correct care preserves functionality while enhancing natural patina. Tea masters recommend brewing fermented teas like Pu'er or black tea to maximize aroma development.
This zisha teapot now represents a perfect fusion of traditional craftsmanship and modern aesthetics. It perpetuates centuries-old techniques while demonstrating material diversity in purple clay art. For international tea enthusiasts, it serves both as practical utensil and cultural gateway. With each brewing session, the warm texture and tea fragrance blend seamlessly, offering tangible connection to China's enduring artistic legacy.
